What is the main product and how do I change it?

The main product is the product that represents a product group whenever LinkedOption needs one preferred product.

Depending on your settings, the main product can:

• Collection display: Show only the main product from each group on collection pages.
• Canonical URL: Use the main product URL as the canonical URL for all linked product pages.

The other products stay active and can still be opened from the product page.

How the main product is chosen

If you have not chosen one, the first active product in the group that is published to the Online Store is used automatically.

If the current main product is removed from the group, changed to Draft, or unpublished from the Online Store, another eligible product is selected automatically.

How the main product is used

Collection display

When Show only the main product from each group is enabled under Settings > Collection display, shoppers see the main product instead of every product in the group on the selected collection pages.

Canonical URL

When Use the main product in the product group as the canonical URL for all linked products is enabled under Settings > General > Canonical URL, the storefront script updates or creates the rel="canonical" tag on every linked product page. It uses the main product URL while preserving the current storefront domain and language prefix.

This tells search engines which product URL is preferred for the group. It does not redirect shoppers, change the URL in their browser, unpublish the other products, or remove their product pages.

Change the main product

1. Go to Product groups.
2. Open the group you want to edit.

3. Find Main product on the right.
4. Click Change.
5. Select the product that should represent the group.

6. Click Save.

3 — Save the product group.

Any enabled main-product feature will use the new selection. Storefront data can take a few minutes to update.

If the Main product card is missing

The card appears after you add a product to the group and enable at least one of these settings:

• Settings > Collection display > Show only the main product from each group
• Settings > General > Canonical URL > Use the main product in the product group as the canonical URL for all linked products

Which products can be selected?

A main product must:

• belong to the product group;
• have an Active status;
• be published to the Online Store.

If the selected product is no longer eligible, LinkedOption automatically uses another eligible product from the group.
